Motoring Services

"Everything in life is somewhere else and you get there in a car"  -  E. B. White

The village is well served by reputable motor servicing and testing centres.  Unfortunately there is no longer a filling station, the closest being at Bunny then Kegworth, Hathern or the service area near Junction 24 of the M1 motorway.

PETROL THEFT SOLVED

Well not legally theft but it's petrol for which you pay and which you never get to use.  Believe it or not, it's partly your own fault!

Because of the way petrol pumps work, you could be losing litres of fuel every time you fill up.  The problem is the volatile way petrol behaves when agitated and to avoid potential problems with the highly flammable vapours generated as you fill your tank, the pump has a return vent so that any vapour is returned to the underground tank.   If it didn't you could be overwhelmed by vapour escaping from your tank.  Here's how to make sure you get what you pay for and you might be amazed at how much extra money this can save you.

First of all, try to fill up early in the day when the ground (and the tanks underground) are at their coolest, especially in hot weather.  The cooler the fuel the more dense it is and the less it tends to evaporate so you actually get more fuel when it's cooler.  Don't be surprised if your fuel gauge appears to go higher as you get a mile or two down the road - that's due to expansion as fuel warms up.

Next, fill up slowly because the faster you pump the fuel, the more you agitate it and the more vapour is generated so more of your fuel returns to the underground tank.

Follow these tips and for the sake of a few extra minutes to fill up and choosing the coolest part of the day, you could save £s each time you fill up depending on the capacity of your tank. If you don't beieve it, try doing a comparison and then work out how much money you could save in a year - in my case I estimate between £50 and £100 annually - a nice Christmas bonus easily earned!
