Social, Community
& Volunteers
"Compassion is not weakness, and concern for the
unfortunate is not socialism".
Hubert H Humphrey (1911-1978)
If you have an organisation or community service that should be listed here, please send your details and any pictures so we can give you a FREE listing and promote the excellent work that is done by all those concerned. If you can recommend an organisation that should be listed, please let us know. Also remember if you use any of these services - they are provided largely by caring volunteers who give their time, often at their own expense, to help others. Treat them with proper regard!
East Leake Community Care Association
The Association continues to provide and co-ordinate a variety of voluntary community support services for East Leake and surrounding areas. It is supported by contributions from individuals and local authorities but most importantly, local people who generously give up their time to help others and make this a great place for everyone to live. The village is enriched by their presence and we acknowledge their contribution to this remarkable community.
The schemes include a Transport Scheme for people with mobility difficulties, a twice monthly Day Centre for 'Over 60s', a Bereavement Group, a Carers Group and the Loan of Equipment service - wheelchairs, walking frames etc.
New volunteers are always needed and if you have any spare time and would like to help in any way at all, please get in touch with one of the following organisers. If you can't get through please call another from the list below.

Soar Valley Shopping Bus Service
For a trial period there will be a weekly shopping service operating on a "pick up at your door" basis. This started on 1st October and will run every Wednesday subject to there being sufficient demand. Pick-up will be from about 11.00am depending on the pick-up point and the return journey will be at 12.40pm from the village. There is a fare of 50 pence for both single or return journeys and it is hoped that there will be a volunteer helper in addition to the driver.
The primary function is to provide cheap transport for people who have difficulty carrying shopping home by foot or even on regular public transport, thus provide a shopping opportunity for people who might not otherwise be able to shop locally. Initially it was thought this would be mostly mostly older people or those with disabilities but there is no reason why a single Mum with a baby shouldn't use the service just the same. Free bus passes are not accepted.
The service is initially supported through generous funding by East Leake Parish Council but it should become self supporting in the longer term. As with everything else in the village, USE IT or LOSE IT and this applies to our local shops and amenities.
If you're interested in using the service and would like to arrange a pickup, contact Doris Elcock of East Leake Community Care on 01509 852778
Transport Scheme
This is a social car scheme helping people of any age who have mobility difficulties and who are unable to enlist the help of relatives or friends. The County Council provide a grant which helps to meet the cost so we have to work to the criteria that apply to the grant. All users must register with us using a forms, available from the Area Organisers. Journeys are usually for hospital visits and other health care appointments.
Occasionally if transport is available a shopping trip may be arranged but this cannot be offered on a regular basis. Similarly we are able to offer a maximum of two journeys a week within 20 miles of East Leake so if you have difficulty reaching a destination for any of the above reasons, please contact your local organiser.
We need as much notice as possible, at least 2 working days for local journeys and a week for journeys of any distance including hospital appointments. This is so we can make the necessary arrangements and make the best use of our volunteer drivers.
To book transport contact the relevant Area Organiser listed above and give your name, address, telephone and scheme registration number. Also any special needs such as wheelchair use or a friend to accompany you. If you are not registered, you will need to complete a form before we can help you.
If you have difficulty contacting an Area Organiser don't leave a message but contact another name on the list. Once arrangements are made, your will be contacted with the name of your driver. If you have a parking permit, bring it with you so your driver can park appropriately or you may have to pay.
Day Centre
Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month in the Methodist Church and are open to anyone over age 60. We provide morning coffee or tea from 10.45am followed by activities. A hot lunch is supplied and we finish about 1.30pm. The Soar Valley Community Bus is available for those who require transport. If you're interested please contact Doris Elcock on 01509 852778.
Equipment Loan
The following equipment is available for short term loan: Wheelchairs, Cosy Toes (for use with our wheelchairs), Car Swivel Seats, Walking Frames, Portable Display Boards.
Please remember that these items are offered for short term loan only and must be returned so others can use them. Normally if you require equipment it should be provided from official sources.
If you require any of these please contact 01509 852778
Bereaved Friends
This group meets alternate Thursdays in the Health Centre at East Leake from 8pm to 9pm. We offer support and friendship at any stage of bereavement so please don't grieve alone when you can share it with others who have probably known a similar experience. The group arranges outings for its members and has a range of resources available for loan including videos, cassettes and books about coping with bereavement.
Contact 01509 853866 for information.
Carers Group
A Community Care service which may be the sole source of support or complement family and statutory help.
Our aim is to provide 2 hours a week sitting service to give the carer free time whilst the person for whom they care is being looked after. This allows time for shopping or health appointments or just a bit of gardening with peace of mind.
Please contact 01509 853866 for more information. The same contact number is for anyone who is interested in volunteering as a sitter - we need volunteers!
Befriending Scheme
This new service became available in July 2008 with the aim of helping to reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness suffered by elderly people who live alone. We are recruiting volunteers who will visit elderly or disable people in their own homes for 1 or 2 hours a week to provide a listening ear and a friendly chat. However this service does not include personal care or housekeeping tasks - it is solely for companionship.
Anyone over the age of 60 who feels alone or isolated is eligible for the scheme. All volunteers are CRB checked and have to provide references so you can be assured that they are genuine and committed.
If you would like someone to visit you or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Doris on 01509 852778.
Pre-School Playgroup
The Playgroup has been established in the village for over thirty years and can be found at the Village Hall in Main Street. It has a kind and friendly environment and is open to children aged 2 to 5 years. Sessions run from 9am to 11.45am during term time with a snack and a drink during the morning. Children who attend Playgroup can take part in a wide range of activities all based upon learning through play.
The Playgroup is a registered charity and as such, often runs fundraising events aimed at both children and parents such as Halloween Discos, Jumble Sales and a very popular Christmas Fair. For more information you can call into the Village Hall during session time or call 07979 574830 at other times
